ANOTHER RAPE AND DEATH OF AN OFW LEADS TO A TOTAL DEPLOYMENT BAN
내용요약 (Summary)
Is the need to earn worth risking their life?
Before the eve of New Year’s Day 2019, news broke out about a Filipina maid who died after being beaten to death by her employer’s wife overseas.
An autopsy made by Philippine authorities also revealed that she was sexually abused.
Back in 2018, a woman grieves as she meets the remains of her sister at the Manila International airport after it was found stuffed in a freezer in an abandoned apartment overseas belonging to a couple who hired her.
Evidence showed that she had been tortured and strangled.
Another Filipino woman was able to return to the Philippines in the same year, alive, but that was after her employer reportedly doused her with boiling water. She suffered second-degree burns from her neck down to her thighs.
Much earlier than these cases, in 2016, a domestic worker fell into a coma after her employer violently assaulted and raped her. She died.
These are just a few of the cases that show the extent of abuses a number of Filipina domestic workers might be suffering overseas.
The deaths and abuses should be enough to deter Filipinos from going to these high-risk areas, especially through illegal channels, but it seems like the need to earn money is worth taking the risk.
Are they too desperate to consider the higher pay more than their safety?
Where do these cases of abuse happen? And why, despite of the danger, do Filipino women choose to work in these countries?
